Research

This is my research for the storyboard project.

Brand/Product: MoneySupermarket

Duration of the Advertisement: 1:00

Brief Overview/Summary: Two men drive a cool car, listening to rap music. Another man "drives" next to them in an invisible car. The advertisement continues and the man does "cool" things, such as talking to women. The advert ends with guest star Snoop Dogg with three women and a fancy car, promoting the insurance company.

1. Target Audience: The advert targets both the young and old generation, around the ages 18 - 50. They mainly target men, but their product is useful for both genders. MoneySupermarket is a British company, however the setting is located in America, so it targets both the British population and the American population living in Britain. Their insurance is for people who are from the lower to middle class, who has both a license and a car (or people planning on buying a car). Fans of Snoop Dogg would also be attracted.

2. Message and Purpose: The company aims to attract more of the young generation rather than the older generation. This is shown by the guest appearance of Snoop Dogg, who is mostly popular with the younger generation due to his rap music career. The things the main character does also resonates with the younger generation, such as having parties and trying to be cool.

3. Meaning and Interpretation: The cars used are sleek and shiny. The people at the beginning were shown to be cooler than the nerdy guy who used an invisible car, however the other guy was much happier with his life.

4. Effectiveness: It's effective and indelible to its target audience, mostly because of the celebrity star appeal and the humor presented in the short advertisement.

5. Personal Response: In my opinion, it's not my type of humor, but I still think that it'd convince me to buy their insurance.

Brand/Product: Cadbury

Duration of the Advertisement: 1:30

Brief Overview/Summary: The advert starts with a gorilla taking deep breaths with Phil Collins "In the Air" playing. The camera slowly zooms out and the gorilla starts playing the drum to the beat of the music.

1. Target Audience: Cadbury attracts the younger generation (5 - 30 years old) due to the humorous nature of their advert. It is appealing to both genders, and to fans of Phil Collins as well. It targets all social classes as their chocolates are usually inexpensive.

2. Message and Purpose: Cadbury tries resonating with the younger generation. Although the advert does not make sense, it is still humorous and memorable. The background is also shown to be purple, Cadbury's signature color. When consumers think back to the commercial, the purple backdrop will remind them of Cadbury's chocolate.

3. Meaning and Interpretation: There is no clear interpretation or meaning as the video does not relate much to the company and is intended to just be funny. However, the backdrop is Cadbury's signature color, purple.

4. Effectiveness: It is overall very effective, because it is still popular even decades later. The gorilla makes it memorable.

5. Personal Response: In my opinion, it could be better and more related to the topic of Cadbury's chocolate products. I think it would further enhance sales. They could show the gorilla maybe eating the chocolate before or after it starts/finished drumming, instead of showing it separately at the end.

Brand/Product: Barbie (Mattel)

Duration of the Advertisement: 31 seconds

Brief Overview/Summary: The ad starts with the barbie logo transforming into another Barbie logo. Then it shows 3 dolls being played with by 3 girls. Their hair is styled using toys. The girls start dancing to a themed song.

1. Target Audience: The advertisement targets young black girls around the ages of 5 - 13 years old, who enjoy Barbie products and dolls in general.

2. Message and Purpose: Barbie aims to attract more black girls due to them being a minority. Children are usually more tempted to buy a doll that looks like them rather than those that look different.

3. Meaning and Interpretation: The advert is bright and colorful and has a cheery theme song that resonates with their target audience. It's very in style with the early 2000's aesthetic.

4. Effectiveness: It's very effective. The song and dance were very in-theme with the Barbie company.

5. Personal Response: In my own personal opinion, I think that this is an exceptional example of what a good advert targeted to a young audience should be like. There is nothing I'd like to change.

Brand/Product: Temu

Duration of the Advertisement: 30 seconds

Brief Overview/Summary: A woman buys clothing for cheap prices off of a website called Temu. As she goes on her day, she buys cheap items for the people she meets. This makes them happy. The scene cuts to her giving a child a box, which cuts to a scene of a factory worker handling the box. The video ends with multiple people dancing on the street and the brand slogan "shop like a billionaire".

1. Target Audience: It targets people of all ages and genders. They target people of the low and middle class as their products are very cheap and perfect for those who need to save money while still buying their everyday necessities and luxury items.

2. Message and Purpose: Its purpose is to attract customers with an easily remembered, catchy song and its signature bright orange color. They advertise their cheap prices and free shipping, which comes in a very cheap price.

3. Meaning and Interpretation: This ad promotes the website Temu, where a woman buys affordable clothing. She spreads happiness by giving inexpensive items to others throughout her day. The ad suggests that small gestures have a positive impact. It also hints at ethical sourcing, showing a factory worker handling a box. The message is to shop wisely while still enjoying a sense of luxury, akin to "shopping like a billionaire".

4. Effectiveness: The ad's effectiveness hinges on its ability to emotionally connect with viewers through acts of kindness, affordability, and ethical sourcing. By portraying the joy of thoughtful, budget-friendly shopping on Temu, and hinting at a sense of luxury, the ad aims to resonate with target audiences, creating a positive brand image and potentially driving conversions.

5. Personal Response: In my opinion, I think that it's a very effective ad. It's catchy and resonates well with the target audiences. I like it very much and there is nothing I would like to change or improve.
